What is Creativity?

Creativity manifests in myriad ways. Human creativity flows freely from the moment of cerebral inception, through the physical act of creation, resulting in the finished product. No one would doubt the pure invention involving in carving a sculpture, writing a song or penning a poem.

Unfortunately, we most often hear and use the word "creative" to describe artists, musicians, and writers. This correlation of creativity with certain faculties, while merited, can be exclusionary. Using the word "creative" to describe solely artistic abilities has limited the definition of what a creative person can be.

Human nature gives all people the ability to be infinitely ingenious. Creativity can and should be applied to all people, passions and jobs. Creativity, to us, is a liberated state of mind, which can and should be applied to all people, to all passions and to all jobs.

If the essence of the creativity is at the core lying within each of us, then why do many people remain far from self-expression? Perhaps it is because they lack a platform to present their ideas. It is up to those of us who have access to creative outlets to serve each other through inspiration and partnerships. We must be humble enough not only to see our passionate plans, but the creative promise of others.

We are now at a creative crossroads. We have the technology and innovation to create a new way to let formerly unheard voices reach listeners across the globe. It is our duty and our honor to set up the microphones and turn on spotlights, so that those previously standing at the back of the room may take center stage.

We can be agents for a creative global community based upon freedom of expression that allows every person to reach his or her fullest potential. I invite you now to be a part of our creative community. I introduce to you a new open artistic outlet, For Art's Sake Media.

In creating For Art's Sake Media we sought to answer questions about the art world we have encountered time and time again: What is art? Who determines its value? And, most importantly, who is it for? We have come to a revelation that could radically transform the answers to these questions. The goal of For Art's Sake Media is to create a experiment in art that will result in an open dialogue about the nature of art and its value.

What is Art?

This is a question that has intrigued philosophers, theorists and artists for hundreds of years. But now, we ask you, "What is art?" Is art a sunset over an endless ocean? Is it Raphael's School of Athens? Does Banksy's guerilla graffiti qualify as art? Can art be seen in the latest limited release NIKE sneakers? In the Cliff Dwellings in Mesa Verde? A Swatch watch? Marcel Duchamp's Ready-Mades? That special picture you took of your spouse on your honeymoon? Your child's first finger-painting? Or the Cubatron by Mark Lottor at Burning Man?

Or maybe art is something else entirely. Maybe art lacks a singular definition. Maybe each individual creates his or her own definition of art and, in turn, creates his or her own monetary value system within the art market.

Every human being has a distinct perspective. And the expression of this perspective is what creates art. This expression makes art beautiful and unique, and that is what makes art valuable. Every work of art -- whether a $25 photograph or $30 million Van Gogh -- is unique. At the end of the day, all art consists of light refracting off an object and then traveling to one's retinas where it is interpreted by the mind. In this regard, each work of art is equal. We believe that ALL art is priceless.

We DO believe that art is a luxury. But that luxury derives from knowing that a piece you love -- whatever medium (fashion, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture, crafts, paintings, writings, photographs) -- is UNIQUE and special to you. And no one can take that away. That is a luxury to which everyone is entitled.

While we at For Art's Sake Media understand that art is also a multi-billion dollar business, we believe that the value of art is determined fully by an individual. We want art to be accessible and available to everyone, regardless of income or status.

We are in no way trying to change or undermine the gallery or museum institutions. They play an integral and invaluable role in the promotion and representation of art since art has become a business. We will never replace seeing art in real life; we only hope to add to the accessibility of the experience.
